One of the great challenges in writing fiction is to surprise (I mean *really* surprise) your reader, especially if your reader possesses a seasoned and discerning taste.

How an author manages to generate a genuine surprise in less than 1,000 words is almost beyond me, yet here you have it. I love this story, and look forward teaching it in my fiction workshop this semester.

"My lover had plucked me away from comfort, loaded me with sperm, blinked his eyelashes into mine, and calmly departed. I was left with a son who resembled this lover, and I had gone mad."

Is it possible to fall in love with two lines and want to marry them (ironic, I know, considering the lines themselves) because I do.
