I was sad not to go to a writer's conference this summer but couldn't go since I lacked the right pins! Reading this, I can relive the experience - without the humiliations of sitting next to MOST FAMOUS WRITER at conference at lunch, randomly, and having no clue who he was! But there are other writers to have crushes on besides Ben Percy - the Elvis voice just doesn't do it for me.

I believe that the male editors at TH would not publish something if a writer simply used their charms to get published ( would ya fellas?)

But There is a difference between humor and mean spirited-ness --

It would be mean, for example, say that someone had a job that requires them to think up a brand name for -- let's say, just out of the blue -- diapers -- as their day job and people didn't take their comedy seriously

or

it would be mean to criticize a newbie who didn't know workshop protocol -- for example, someone had never been to tin house writer conference before and the weekend before everyone arrives, the newbie submits another short story to their workshop group -- last minute-- in hopes of getting the group to workshop it too ...

here's a tidbit for ya
the gal with the pins has been around for years, but most of us are classy enough to be satisfied to simply talk behind her back, not
rip her to shreds on paper. cut her a break - she loves this stuff - and remember, she doesn't consider her great shapely legs to be her best asset

knock yourself out, tin house boys
