The photo of The Brooklyn Eagle building is not the building where Whitman was editor. He was editor at the original location which is now The Eagle Warehouse. The Eagle Warehouse is located across the street from The Brooklyn Bridge and just one block up from Fulton Ferry Landing.

Fascinating speculation on Cushman's influence on him.

Regarding being able to imagine dying on a slave ship or working in a windowless factory: it's interesting how much of liberal thought is grounded in the capacity to exercise empathy.
