“Print out your story and put it on a wall. Put it up in a way that allows you to look at it all at once. You might or might not break it up between paragraphs, or scene breaks, or some other obvious structural element that is key to the piece. Look at the patterns of section, chapter, scene, and paragraph size. Look at how your dialogue is formatted and how it relates to the narrated passages. How buried is one or another element, how lifted from the body of the text to glint in what sort of sun. Try eliminating every “return” in the document, read it like that, and then, without looking at your earlier draft, put it in new “returns.” See how the rhythm steers these choices, the rhythm of reading, and then the rhythm of your integration, as a reader, with the text. This creates visible form.”—Lucy Corin, Material
